CASE STUDY

When "No" is Actually an Invitation: Native American Client Case Study

A tribal organization struggling with changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act came to us for assistance in helping deal with addiction and mental health issues on the reservation. Knowing that culturally, telehealth was not something that a tribal community would be interested in, we started by asking questions and listening. 

They wanted indigenous services they believed could help their community address anxiety and substance abuse issues, including engaging a traditional Native American medicine practitioner and creating sweat lodges where the community could connect to the ground, nature, sky, and the galaxy.

We laid out our case to Medicaid for the practitioner and sweat lodge. When we were turned down because they would support only evidence-based programs, we took it as an invitation to provide the evidence they required. Our resulting study allowed members of the reservation to attend sweat lodges and get additional support from a traditional medical practitioner as needed for their mental health and addiction.

Eighteen months later we took the evidence that met the government’s required outcomes back to Medicaid and requested these services for payment. But we were also able to connect the client to additional grant and philanthropic resources particularly suited to this community. In other words, a win-win.
